The Best Free Blackberry Games

Article by Bill Fulks

A look at the top five free game apps for the Blackberry.

Who doesn’t like to play games on their phone? Blackberry users actually have some decent choices when it comes to mobile gaming, so don’t think that iPhone people are having all the fun. Here’s a look at some of the best free Blackberry games you can find on Blackberry App World. Unfortunately, there are not many free ones out there, but these will definitely keep you entertained.

GT Blackjack Online

blackjackThere’s nothing like passing the time with a few rounds of cards and someone else’s virtual money. This great Blackjack game features online play that is a lot like the Blackjack games you’ll find on sites like MySpace and Yahoo. Sometimes a game can go a little slow if other players are taking their time, but it’s still a lot of fun. This game is also great practice if you’re going to play the real deal at a casino. It’s cheaper, too.

Aces Mahjong – Lite

MahjongThis is the lite (demo) version of the full Aces Mahjong game, but it’s still quite fun. This demo lets you play on 5 of the 50 layouts available in the full game. However, those 5 are plenty for the casual gamer since it takes a while to complete each one. This is an excellent time killer as well as strategy game, and it still looks great on the small Blackberry screen. Definitely check it out if you like Mahjong. You might even wind up buying the full version.

Sudoku Lite

SodukoLike Aces Mahjong Lite, this is also a demo game. However, Sudoku Lite lets you play several different Sudoku puzzles and is quite fun. I love testing out my math skills with this game, and it will challenge you no matter how good you think you are. This is a great game to play when you have a few minutes to spare, and it’s also got an educational spin because it makes you do math in your head. Put this one on your phone and let your kids play.

GT Warship Online

WarshipIf you’ve ever played the classic naval battle board game called Battleship, then you already know what to expect from GT Warship Online. It’s a slimmed down version of Battleship, but the basic principle is still the same. You place your ships, then open fire on the opponent’s board and try to figure out where they placed their ships. It goes back and forth until you’ve sunk everything. It sounds rather simple, but I assure you it is fun and addictive. Best of all, it’s free!

Ka-Glom

Ka-GlomKa-Glom is my favorite free Blackberry game. It wasn’t originally made to be a free game, but App World says it is free for a limited time only. The thing is, it has said that for several months, so get it while you still can. This awesome game is like a cross between Tetris and a connect-four type puzzler. It also has a puzzle mode that will challenge you. For more information, check out my Ka-Glom review.

Blackberry Storm Review: First Full Screen Touch Phone From Blackberry

It may seem like the iPhone may have the full touch screen smartphone market cornered. There aren’t many phones to choose from in this family. It takes a very innovative company to release a rival full touch screen smartphone. Blackberry offers consumers such a rival. The RIM Blackberry Storm is one of the latest additions to the full touch screen smartphone line. It is the first full touch screen cell phone from Blackberry. Blackberry entered the race with a complete set of advantages and feature set it has brought along with from its impressive Blackberry smartphone line. With its impressive list of features and low price the RIM Blackberry Storm will make a great phone for anyone who is looking for an affordable replacement to the iPhone. But the Storm also does come with a list of minor problems that can hamper a person’s enjoyment of the phone.

The RIM Blackberry Storm is quite similar to the iPhone in its design and look. The notable differences are that the Storm is shorter and heavier than the iPhone. Also there are standard phone controls located under the display screen. The biggest achievement is the Storms utilization of SurePress technology. This allows the user to perform functions by actually clicking on the screen instead of just tapping it. Unfortunately clicking on the screen does take a while to get used to because honestly clicking on the screen feels awkward. Also anyone with big hands or fingers might have trouble typing messages because the keyboard that is displayed is quite small and the letters are crammed together. Those accustom to trackball navigator might miss it as it is absent on the RIM Blackberry Storm.

The RIM Blackberry Storm offers the same features found on all previous Blackberry phones. It continues offering its users an amazing operating system and even upgrades it from the previous installment. The user is able to use and open various Microsoft Office files such as Word, Excel and even Power Point. As with previous Blackberry phones the Storm is able to link with your company’s Blackberry Enterprise Server allowing you access to corporate emails and files. The phone can even act as a wireless modem for laptops. It is an amazing application which costs only $15 a month.

The phone feels as if it was rushed to be released just in time for the holidays because there are a lot of bugs and small glitches. The accelerometer needed more work. Switching the phone to and from landscape mode was fine but websites took a while to change screen position. The multimedia controls are also affected by this. When rotating the phone the controls sometimes appeared to be flashing and even disappear from the screen at one point. Aside from the accelerometer websites generally took a while to load and certain apps were sluggish upon launching.

As far as the phone performance the RIM Blackberry Storm did great. Callers can enjoy clear and crisp calls. The voices on the other end will sound very well. Also your voice will sound clear to your caller as well. The microphone is great at isolating and not picking up background noise.

The RIM Blackberry Storm could use more work. There have been promises of firmware upgrades which will fix many of the bugs found on this phone. While the updates to fix some of the problems they don’t address all of them. But for the price of the phone and amazing capabilities it is still a reasonable buy. Just be sure to get the firmware upgrade if you decide to purchase this phone.

Review: BlackBerry Storm

Review: BlackBerry Storm

The Storm's music player is nearly identical to that found on the Bold and the Pearl Flip, save for the integration of touch. Tap the Media icon in the main menu to open the gateway to all the Storm's media.

The basic music menu is unchanged from other 'Berries. It lets you select from the songs, artists, genres, albums, playlists, etc. For the first time in recent memory, there is actually an equalizer available for users to alter the sound, You have to hit the BlackBerry key to find it, under the options selection. It offers 12 equalizer pre-sets to adjust the sound a little bit better to your tastes. You can also turn an audio boost function on and off. This raises the maximum volume of playback.

The player is no more impressive than the Curve's. You can play or pause/stop the music with the touch screen, as well as skip forward and backward tracks. As with most media players, a progress bar shows you how much of the song remains, and album art is displayed if it is tagged to the song. Again, the BlackBerry key pulls up a big menu of options that can be altered during playback, such as sending the music to a Bluetooth headset, setting the current song as a ringtone, and others.

Music played back through the speaker sounds okay, but not great. You can make it insanely loud if you want, but the quality of the sound suffers a bit if you do. Music sounds pretty good through either regular headphones or stereo Bluetooth headphones. The EQ and audio boost function both go a long way to making the Storm one of the best-sounding 'Berries I've reviewed.

Music can be sideloaded directly onto a microSD card. It can also be drag-and-dropped through mass storage mode. Lastly, it can be synced with the Roxio music software (which comes with the device), or an as-yet-unreleased piece of software that will allow direct syncing with iTunes.
